Carmen Johnson Muscular Therapy

What should I expect during my first massage therapy visit?

A health history form is required prior to any treatments, so that I can properly assess you and your bodies needs.  After, your massage therapist will begin by asking you general questions to establish what areas on your body you would like to or need assessed during your treatment. A health history is very important to see if there are any conditions that need to be addressed and to determine if massage is appropriate for you at this point in time.  Sometimes body assessments and testing; such as Range of Movement will be used to evaluate your body, biomechanics, and to see if you have any presenting complaints.

What is the difference between an Adult Massage and a Pediatric Massage session?

Children's bodies are constantly changing and developing until the age of 18. School age children have less developed muscles, soft tissue and bones than adult's.  A pediatric massage session will be slower paced and shorter sessions than an adult session.  The pressure is lighter to accommodates the developing body and to ensure trust and respect draping is done carefully and more conservative. A Parent or Guardian is always close by or in the same room to provide comfort to the child, sometimes the parent or guardian is needed to help to facilitate treatments and with self care.  Story Massages are sometimes used to bring a bonding of caregiver, child and therapist during a session.

Where will my massage session take place?

Your massage will take place in a warm, inviting, comfortable loft room. Soft music may be played to help you relax.  If you have a preference of music you would like to listen to, you are welcome to bring your own or choose from my selection. Massage treatments are given on a table made specially for massage therapy. Clients or patients are always bolstered with towels or pillows designed  for your comfort.

What do I wear during the massage?

It is always up to the client or patient to what your comfort level is when it comes to disrobing.  For a full body massage, most client/ patients disrobe completely, however, you may choose to wear your undergarments or remain fully clothed as well. It is possible to give a full body massage completely clothed.  You will be given privacy to undress and than get situated under a sheet and blanket.  You will be covered at all times except the area of your body being worked upon.  Please feel free to wear comfortable shorts if you would like your session to include stretching and other sports massage techniques.

What do I do during a massage treatment?

Make yourself as comfortable and at home as possible.  If your position needs to be adjusted for whatever reason, your massage therapist will either move you or ask you to move what is needed to address the particular area.  Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; other's prefer to talk. It is up to you, this is your time.  It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. If you have any questions during your treatment, do not hesitate to ask.

How will a massage feel?

It usually depends on the techniques used. In general the body is warmed up with long flowing strokes to calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension.  As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. Often, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin.  Do not hesitate to ask questions or mention if you feel any discomfort so that the massage therapist can adjust pressuer or techniques to meet your bodies needs.

Will the massage oils used make me break out?

I use only hypoallergenic natural massage oils or lotions. However, if you have sensitivity to or are allergic to a certain types of nuts, oils and lotions please bring it to the massage therapist's attention before your treatment begins.

Is massage always appropriate?

No, there are several medical conditions that would make massage contraindicated. That is why it is necessary that you fill out the health history forms before you begin your session. It is very important that you inform your massage therapist of any health problems or medications you are currently taking or change over the course of your treatements. If you are under the care of a physician, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage prior ro any session.

How long will a massage treatment last?

The average full body a massage treatment lasts approximately one hour. A half an hour appointment only allows for a partial massage session, such as neck and shoulders, or just the back, or the legs and feet.  Many people prefer a 60 to 90 minute massage session for optimal relaxation and treatment.  Booking times vary but standard is add 15 minutes to allow for getting on and off the table, rebooking and paying.

How will I feel after the massage treatment?

Most people feel relaxed, some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains that developed from tension patterns or repetitive activities over time.  After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience an increase in energy, heightened awareness, and  greater productivity which can last for days. Since, toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage session. Epsom salt baths, and ginger or green tea are also another great way to relieve toxins from your body.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

A 24 hour notice is required on all appointments. I understand that weather and emergencies do come up, but if you are unable to provide sufficient notice and I am unable to reschedule the appointment, you will be responsible for the payment in full. Thank you for respecting both of our time.
